Injuries and surgeries can result in damage to peripheral tissues. In order to get them to work correctly, special techniques are often used. One of those treatments is neuromuscular re-education therapy.
What is Neuromuscular Re-Education?
This technique is a therapeutic method that is used to improve things such as:
- Balance
- Coordination
- Posture
- Kinesthetic awareness
- Proprioception
It works by training the nervous system to send signals to peripheral tissues that are impaired, such as muscle and joint mechanoreceptors. What this does is re-establishes the right resting pattern as well as movement patterning.
Improving Coordinated Movements
In order to produce smooth, coordinated movements, it is necessary to plasticize the motor pathways and neural networks. This also decreases the pain associated with specific dysfunctions. The process includes treatments such as:
- Neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES)
- Real-time musculoskeletal Ultrasound (MSKUS)
NMES is also known as Russian stimulation. This type of therapy can produce excellent results when used in the appropriate situation. Musculoskeletal ultrasound imaging is a fundamental part of the treatments.
