Neuromuscular Re-education Therapy
Neuromuscular re-education is a therapeutic technique used to improve balance, coordination, posture, kinesthetic awareness, and proprioception by training the nerves to send signals to impaired peripheral tissues such as muscle and joint mechanoreceptors. This re-establishes optimal resting tone and movement patterning. Plasticizing the neural networks and motor pathways is necessary to produce smooth coordinated movements and decrease the pain associated with particular dysfunctions. Examples include neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES), also referred to as Russian stimulation, and real-time musculoskeletal ultrasound (MSKUS).
