Auto Accidents

In the United States motor vehicle accidents are common and occur on a daily basis. Even a minor accident may still have an effect on the muscles, joints, and nerves.

A reflex guarding response may be initiated by the sympathetic nervous system. This is part of the "Fight or Flight" mechanism which kicks in to protect the body from further trauma. Sometimes this reflex becomes hyperactive and can even remain for years. The result is increased muscle tension, decreases blood flow, joint stiffness, and fatigue.

Often there is a whiplash injury occurring from the force of the impact which causes actual tissue damages, fracture, torn ligaments, etc.

Physical therapy can aid in decreasing the pain and loss of function associated with this type of injury. The physical therapist will introduce procedures to shut off the reflex guarding and gradually increase range of motion, flexibility, strength, and endurance.
